Our Artists - Allan Ludlow

Al Ludlow was employed for nearly fifty years in the production side of the commercial art business. As a former art student at Beal Tech in London, he learned all aspects of the graphics industry back in the 1950’s. He learned early on that he loved the challenge of the Offset Camera as well as the all-round jobs involved in creating the final graphics projects. Variety makes for a very interesting work life.

It is for this reason when computers came into the picture, Al was ready for a new venue. Having just retired, he was looking for a new avenue for his now free time.

In June of 1997, a chance encounter with Birgie Platz Stoll, a former co-worker in the later 60’s prompted him to perhaps purchase a computer. His new PC would be a whole new learning tool.

Together Al and Birgie developed all sorts of ideas for a business venue. As an avid holiday photographer, it made good sense to get his camera out and start photographing again. First, he began photographing towns which were of significance to him. The images would be used for something in the future.
He scanned all of Birgie’s pressed flower designs as well as photographed all her framed and unframed paintings so that she could print them herself. This led Al to print art cards for other well-known artists in Oakville. It was a truly fulfilling learning time, where new beginnings were definitely around the corner. By August 1998, they were partners in work and play, registering Albirg Creations their home-based business.

At the same time, Al continued to play his trombone professionally, his passion for more than 50 years. In 2002 he hung up his horn, moving to St. Catharines in 2004 to be closer to the Niagara tourist country where new possibilities would be found for Albirg Creations.

Since then, Al has custom many marketable items, partook in many Niagara Craft Shows and Fundraisers, as well as leading his expertise to others. Looking Back Trivets have become one of Al and Birgie’s favourite projects. We now have our Reflections of Ontario Trivets, cards, and postcards in some Ontario gift shops, a goal we proudly accomplished.

Al and Birgie now have a permanent home for all their Albirg creations and Birgie Artwerkz. Please visit Birgie and friends, 4343 Queen Street, Niagara Falls across from City Hall.
